Get Your Home Summer Ready!

6 Easy Tasks to Help You Get the Most Out of Summer

The days are getting longer, and the weather is getting warmer – for summer enthusiasts everywhere, the time has come to kick back and enjoy the great outdoors. To get the most out of the summer months, take some time to prepare your home so that you can relax and enjoy your leisure time.

Check for mosquito magnets.

With the warm weather comes those pesky little bloodsuckers, but with a bit of effort, you can remove mosquito breeding grounds by eliminating water sources. Take time to inspect your property for standing water and empty it thoroughly. Make note of these water sources, including your hose stations, flower pots, and furniture, and drain them regularly throughout the summer. Be sure to clean your gutters and downspouts too. Not only can they retain water for mosquito nests, but clogged gutters can also damage your siding. If you use an irrigation system or hoses, inspect them for damage, as leaks can produce standing water that will attract pests as well as damage your lawn and garden.

Set up a spot for your summer gear.

There is no need to spend your summer searching for supplies when you should be out enjoying the sun. To help keep your house tidy, create a station near the door to hang damp towels and swimsuits. Place an attractive bin close by. Roll up and store your clean, brightly colored towels so they are close at hand. Add a bowl or basket to stash sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses, and an updated first aid kit for the family to grab on their way out the door.

Reorganize your kitchen.

Give your family the gift of simplicity by reorganizing your kitchen for summer meal prep. Box up your winter non-perishables and appliances and store them out of your way. Break out the ice cream makers and blenders and consider setting up a smoothie station for fast access to whip up some cool summer treats. If you have kids, instead of spending all summer making them meals and treats, establish a kid-friendly station with snacks and basic supplies for them to practice their culinary skills.

Prepare to keep your house cool for the hot summer months.

It is time to put away the space heaters and break out the fans. Be sure to wipe down all fans to prevent filling the air with dust and debris. If you use window units, install them, and if you have central heat and air, call your local HVAC company to schedule your semi-annual maintenance service.

Clean out your garage or outdoor shed.

Take some time to clean out your storage space. Begin by disposing of or donating items you no longer need, and then reorganize what you want to keep by zones of use. Store your winter goods and holiday decorations in the back to make items such as garden supplies, sports and outdoor gear, and frequently used tools more accessible. Locate your seasonal gear, such as beach umbrellas, camping equipment, and pool accessories, and clean and inspect them so that they are ready for use.

Revive your outdoor living space.

Prepare your decks or porches for relaxing afternoons alone or evening gatherings with your family and friends. Spruce up the furniture with a thorough cleaning and some colorful cushions and pillows. A clean and well-functioning grill can serve as an outdoor mini-kitchen. Throw in some festive plastic wear, some pretty glasses, and an ice bucket, and you are ready to entertain. If children are part of your lifestyle, remember that outdoor play equipment can deteriorate over time. Clean and inspect the wood, fastenings, slides, and swings and address any safety concerns.
